CONCRETE ISLAND DISCS: Adam Welbourne Talks Influencial Vocalists

Adam Welbourne is the new vocalist in post-hardcore metal outfit Remains of You. Adan 24, previously served time in Krakengun before joining Remains of You at the end of the summer. Only a handful of gigs in and he’s already making a name for himself as not only a great frontman but also a very original and versatile vocalist. In his voice I hear a myriad of influences from Black Metal to Death Metal and Melodic Hardcore to Punk.

Adam says he is putting all his efforts right now into Remains and their up and coming shows. He says ‘music for me is all about brutality and having a laugh with good people on and off the road… every bit of effort is needed from all of us to get this death machine running and to make it a success!’

I have no doubt that 2013 will an awesome year for Remains of You. The tight-knit unit have all the technical skill and energy to make real strides in the national scene.

I caught up with Adam to find out which vocalists have inspired both him and his vocal style. Here’s who he picked:

VINCENT BENNETT – THE ACACIA STRAIN
“Vince for me…  his writing style, the harshness of it, it just does it for me and I try and incorporate that into my lyric writing with Remains.”

PHIL BOZEMAN – WHITECHAPEL
“With Phil, it’s the overall sound and his technique that draws me to him.”

ALEXANDRE ERIAN & STEVE MAROIS – DESPISED ICON
“I’ve always liked the two vocalists of this band. In my opinion, it brings a unique edge to metal.”

THEO – LAST WITNESS
“…it’s the pure rawness of his vocals.”

ALEX KOEHLER – CHELSEA GRIN
“His high vocal technique is just sick and his vocal range is something I can aspire to.”

***

Other than being a big Whitechapel fan myself, I can really hear elements of Alex Koehler’s in Adam’s voice and I reckon he’s being pretty modest, because he isn’t too far removed from it either.

In my opinion, it’s refreshing to see someone doing something different vocally in Barnsley’s metal scene and he sits comfortably with the guys from Trudger and CF Bundy as the most brutal and original out there. You can hear it for yourself as Remains of You have a number of forthcoming live dates this autumn. They are also putting the finishing touches to their debut EP, which we will be reviewing as soon as it’s ready.
