August saw the opening of a new commercial art space in Elsecar Heritage Centre. Unit 10 used to be the space occupied by The Hive Gallery, a contemporary art gallery with a rolling programme of exhibitors and shows. Now, the newly opened Modern Art Gallery Yorkshire hopes to bring the people of Yorkshire, quality and diverse art at affordable prices.
Already showcasing works for sale by abstract painter Caroline Ashwood, sculptor and graphic designer Bob Ashwood and sculptor David Pippin, the gallery plans to exhibit a collection of indigenous art created be the native aboriginal women folk of the Blacktown mining region of Australia. Very apt then that this will be shown in a place like the Elsecar Heritage Centre, a place of great importance when it comes to local industrial history.
Although the name ‘Modern Art Gallery Yorkshire’ is a little adventurous, there is nothing wrong with setting your goals high. Fingers crossed that work of Barnsley artists will also be shown here in the future.
