MUSIC NEWS: GAMA BOMBS OVER BARNSLEY

There has been various social media campaigns over the years to get ‘big bands’ to come and play Barnsley. When Hannah Eatwell set up Noize Assault, she gave herself the aim of brining the best of the UK underground metal to Barnsley. Hannah organises live metal nights at The Polish Club (Barnsley best live venue in my opinion) and alternative rock nights at The Courthouse. Announced this week, Hannah has just taken on her biggest act yet – Ireland’s premier thrash metal outfit, Gama Bomb.
Hannah says,’Noize Assault was set up to try and help evolve the local metal scene, as Barnsley was really lacking a decent live venue for extreme metal. There are so many great local, and underground metal bands across the UK that don’t often get the chance to play here. This is what Noize Assault are trying to change.’

I asked Hannah why she booked Gama Bomb. She said ‘the booking of Gama Bomb came about because people were coming to me, saying no one ‘big comes to Barnsley’ – nothing that people would jump at the chance of seeing. A number of people had suggested Gama Bomb as band they’d like to see here. coincidently, their agent was looking at booking a six date tour for January/February and I jumped at the chance of getting them.’

Barnsley has always had a healthy dose of Thrash Metal running through its veins, and so Gama Bomb is an apt choice. When Gama Bomb announced their six date UK tour this week, talk of ‘why Barnsley?’ was rife on the band’s facebook page. And why not? Barnsley has often been missed out because of its close proximity to Sheffield, Wakefield and Leeds, but that is exactly why we should be attracting these bands. And so we are lucky enough to have the only Yorkshire date on the tour. But to thank for this is Hannah. Bigger bands will only come to small towns like ours because promoters have the balls and take on the risk to get them here.
Personally, I’m very excited to have Gama Bomb playing Tarn. I like to think of them as a Dead Kennedys do Thrash Metal.
