That’s right. 2014 will see Alternative Barnsley put on a series of gigs on a monthly basis in alternating venues across Barnsley. I’ll be hand-selecting some of my favourite Barnsley acts to play in some of my favourite local live music venues. First up…
Richard Kitson
BARNSLEY BLUES FAVOURITE HEADLINES FIRST IN A SERIES OF LOCAL CONCERTS
In what is the first of a series of monthly concerts throughout 2014, Alternative Barnsley present Richard Kitson headlining at the Old No.7 on Friday 24th January.
Richard ended 2013 on a high, when his successful crowd funding campaign saw his 2003 debut album released for a second time for eager fans.
Birdwell’s Richard Kitson is one of Barnsley’s best loved folk and blues musicians. He is influenced by the likes of Bert Jansch, Davy Graham and John Martyn, and Barnsley Folk Club organiser Dave Bottomley called him his favourite local musician. This success follows the early 2013 release of his first itunes single Bicycle Man and the addition of his song Redundant Blues into the Experience Barnsley Archive.
Richard’s live sets are an opportunity to see a true song-writing talent in an intimate setting. Kitson doesn’t say much on stage but he instantly puts the audience at ease with his often self deprecating Yorkshire wit, leaving his songs and his guitar playing to do the real talking.

Richard Kitson has been a regular fixture on the Barnsley music scene since the late 1990s. In 1998, he joined local punk band Strawberry Jack and became notorious on the live circuit, even being barred from a couple of local venues. We hope you can join us kicking off what will be a busy year for Richard. 2014 see his record his third full length album, Hermit Hill and also play Barnsley Folk Club for the first time.
