You can find full links to each confirmed act over on the Live in Barnsley website. For now though, here are a few of my own recommendations…
If the way you are playing it this year is to pick just a couple of venues and stick to them all day rathe than run across town all day like a blue arse fly, then you’ll do good to stick with these. A number of the venues taking part in Live in Barnsley are not normally known as live music venues, but this one is. Opium No.10 has firmly established itself as the go-to-place for live indie music in Barnsley. For the festival though, it will be home to a number of fantastic bands from other genres. You could easily stay here from 6pm onwards and not need to go elsewhere. Everyone An Army, based between Scarbrough and Barnsley are for fans of Deftones, Echo and the Bunnymen, Nine Inch Nails and The Cure and in Martyn Hughes, they have what is easily the finest male vocalist in town. Aztec Doll, fronted by Barnsley’s very own PJ Harvey will play Opium at 7:30pm. If you like Siouxsie or The Chameleons, then these are for you. Allusondrugs are one of the biggest bands on the bill, and are playing more bigger festivals this year. Catch them while you can – heavy rock, grunge and pscyhe all rolled into one.
O Captain sound like a good bet if you’re going to The Londoner. They’re a great alternative indie band from Sheffield. Check Jake Sharpe out if you can. A great guitarist and an amazing voice. However, if you are only able to catch one act here, I can highly recommend you catch Lauren Tate, performing this week for the first time with her full band. Having already notched up 1million views on youtube with her famous covers, she now relaunches herself with a debut EP, for fans of Amanda Palmer, Hole and Linda Perry. The Underground (underneath The Londoner and formerly called Oxygen) is another venue used to live music. Midnight Hitch are an outstanding blues band for fans of Captain Beefheart and Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Black Lamps make a rare live appearance and features members of some of Barnsley’s best acts going back to the 80s post-punk scene. Something you don’t see much of in Barnsley is rap and Jack City is bringing it to you.
Ending on a very heavy note will be Barnsley’s Cavorts. Their debut album is on it’s way, and fresh from supporting Skindred and Dragonforce.Just like last year, Funky Budha (formerly Blah bar) will play host to acoustic acts. F.D. are a favourite with fans of metal and indie alike. They play girl/boy acoustic pop songs. I also highly recommend Feral Indie (aka Lee Bailey). He’s taken it upon himself to write and record two new songs every month, with the added extra of recording two covers per month too. Let’s see how many he can fit in here.
