UNDERNEATH THE STARS FESTIVAL… WHAT’S THAT THEN?

UNDERNEATH THE STARSEarlier this year, Kate Rusby’s family run record label, Pure Records and Cannon Hall Farm announced a brand new festival for Barnsley, the Underneath the Start festival. Named after a 2007 Rusby album, the festival takes place over three days in the grounds of Cannon Hall Farm, and the beautiful setting of the grand Georgian house, Cannon Hall.

The Puppini Sisters play the Planets Stage on Friday 25th.

The festival is good news for those regulars of the Elsecar folk festival Madfest, called it a day following their 2013 event. However, the idea stems from a series of concerts held on previous years at the farm to raise funds for local projects such as the village Cricket Club, Church and Preschool. Now the aim is to develop those concerts into a weekend of world class entertainment in the heart of South Yorkshire, held in a purpose built big-top concert marquee and for the first time this year there will be the opportunity to pitch up and stay at the festival campsite.

The organisers claim ‘Underneath the Stars Festival is committed to providing the best facilities available at a fantastic location for an audience to enjoy the music and magical atmosphere of a great cultural event… There will be a host of activities for a range of ages including craft stalls, workshops, storytelling, and giant planetarium showing incredible educational video presentations and night-sky projections.’
They also say that they will be keeping an ecological eye on the festival surroundings and minimizing the impact to the environment whilst pro-actively raising the public’s awareness to this most important issue. Good news right?

So what can we expect of the music? Well, the festival brings in the best of folk, blues, and music with a retro twist played out over two stages. Here’s the line-up announced so far and at the bottom of this page, find some of my recommended highlights:

  1. It’s great to see such a high profile festival in Barnsley and at Cannon Hall farm too, so you can bet the food will excellent. A pity though that there aren’t more local acts on – it wouldn’t have been hard to find a handfull more of sufficient quality to be at least stage-openers.
