Barnsley artist and illustrator, Gillian Tyler, was recently asked to illustrate the latest book by P.L. Travers, the author famed for creating and penning the story Mary Poppins. The book, titled Aunt Sass Christmas Stories is an autobiographical account of her memories of her real-life Great Aunt Christina Saraset, or ‘Aunt Sass’, the inspiration behind the character of Mary Poppins.
Travers original wrote the story about her in 1941 but only printed 500 copies, giving them to close friends and family to read. The story remained unseen by the public until this Christmas, where it will be published alongside two other stories through Viagro’s Modern Classics imprint.
Travers was born in Queensland in 1899, received an OBE in 1977 and passed away in 1996, aged 96.
Barnsley artist Gillian Tyler was offered the chance to produce the illustrations for the book earlier this year.
