Barnsley will be on the route of the Tour de Yorkshire, it was announced today. At a press conference held by Welcome to Yorkshire at Bridlington, it was revealed that cyclists will ride through Barnsley on Sunday, 3 May this year. As part of the Stage 3, riders coming from Wakefield will pass through New Lodge, Wakefield Road, Eldon Street, past the Town Hall and up Huddersfield Road towards Barugh Green and Cawthorne (prepare for the obligatory wingding about road closures guys). Last year, as part of the Grand Depart, riders passed through the Barnsley village of Langsett (TV cameras went to ad break when they did). I’m looking forward to opportunity to try and recreate some of the cultural events that took place in and around Yorkshire at last year’s Grand Depart and the Yorkshire Festival.
The event, which will be held on 1-3 May, is expected to become a flagship cycling event in the UK in 2015 and an outstanding cycle race in the international calendar, including the participation of top international teams and cycling stars. It will be broadcast live on national TV and throughout Europe and looks set to attract around 1 million cycling enthusiast from around the world.
The race will have three stages over the Bank Holiday weekend in May running from Friday through to Sunday.
A mass sportive with several distances where people can ride the same route as the professionals will be held on day three (3 May) and thousands are expected to take part in what will be a historic first for the county.
The mass ride will be delivered by Human Race – owners of the Dragon Ride and many other sportives – in collaboration with the Tour de Yorkshire organisers.
Cllr Roy Miller, cabinet spokesperson for Place, said “Barnsley Council is delighted to support and be part of such a prestigious sporting event. The race will once again put Barnsley and the wider Yorkshire area under the spotlight, allowing people to see areas of outstanding beauty and showcase the best of what our borough has to offer.”
