A Barnsley-based composer will share his experience of writing music for Hollywood movie trailers at a free event next week. Chris Haigh will be attending the ‘Barnsley Music Network’s’ second seminar on Wednesday (February 25th).
The business development forum for musicians, composers, producers, event promoters, managers and technicians aims to offer expert advice and mutual support to help Barnsley people make money from their musical talent.
The focus of next week’s event will be on exploring opportunities to provide ‘sync’ music for film, TV and advertising.
Chris, whose credits include music for movie trailers including Insurgent – to be released next month – X-Men, Edge Of Tomorrow, The Wolverine, Pacific Rim and Rise of the Planet of the Apes, will be amongst those sharing his experience at the event.
Music network host Damian Baetens, of national creative support organisation Transmit Start-Ups, said: “There is a wealth of musical talent often hidden away in Barnsley and the music network is all about providing a forum for everyone involved in the industry to come together and learn from one another – and from specialist business advisors who know the music industry too.
“It is fantastic to have Chris join us this time as we focus on how to sell music into the film and television ‘sync’ market, and how to develop your business model.
“We look forward to welcoming more new faces to this, our second, event too. Everyone working – or aspiring to work – in all areas of music is invited to attend.”
The Barnsley Music Network was set up three months ago, and is funded through the Enterprising Barnsley business support programme, which is run by Barnsley Council.
Barnsley-born Chris studied creative music technology mastering in film scoring at Barnsley College before embarking on a career as a composer. He has established a successful reputation for producing Hollywood blockbuster trailer music.
Chris’s scores have been recorded and performed by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir in Prague and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
Still based in Barnsley, Chris said: “I set out to create intense, emotional music to enhance the epic majesty of film and have been very lucky to see my work used across a range of Hollywood trailers as well in TV adverts and shows across the world.
“It doesn’t matter where you are based in the global music industry as long as you believe in your talent, make key connections and build relationships.”
The Barnsley Music Network will also feature key note speaker Mark Hobrough from North East-based music management and production company Swansfield Music.
Attendees at the event will also be able to discuss what support and advice they would like to receive at future events.
Tracey Johnson, Enterprising Barnsley’s sector specialist for creative and digital industries, said: “It’s great to be running a second music business support seminar as it was really popular the first time round and attendees took away some quick wins for their businesses.
“The aim is to bring together the many musical talents based in the borough – whether they already have a global client base like Chris or are just setting up a new music enterprise. The network enables people to share experience and gain specialised business development advice to help them explore new markets for their work and to help the sector grow.”
The Music Sector Business Support Network will be held on Wednesday February 25 between 5pm and 8pm at the Digital Media Centre in Barnsley town centre.
